Abandoned icon reborn in Balmain

You may have heard through the grapevine that the one of Balmain’s most renowned pubs has re-opened their beloved doors.

The Exchange Hotel, which was originally opened in 1885, was declared officially closed in April 2017 and left abandoned. Fast forward to July this year, and whilst the bones of the 132 year old building still remain true, The Exchange has transformed the 132 year old building into a space that is open to everyone including families, couples and even our furry little four legged friends.

Upon entry, The Exchange is an intimate and alluring space, perfect for those seeking an aperitif or quiet beverage.

Offering an extensive selection of spirits and uniquely crafted cocktails using seasonal ingredients, the venue also plays tribute to local tap houses and showcases Australia’s esteemed wine regions with their wine selection.

The short and sweet menu boasts a range of classic pub style dishes and ones designed to be shared amongst friends. Enjoy the Charcuterie Board, which includes three delicious meats; Jamon Serrano, air dried beef and Salami accompanied by cornichons pickles, Italian flat-bread, garlic dip and stick bread. After something more substantial, on offer is seven handmade oven roasted Pizzas crafted from local and imported ingredients, including fresh Italian mozzarella.

Nothing beats a classic Margherita and The Exchange’s is no exception, with buffalo mozzarella, olive oil and fresh basil, or try the ‘Mick’, with prosciutto cotto, prosciutto di parma, cherry tomato and balsamic onion. Fancy something light? The Exchange is serving up a Poached Chicken Salad with marinated tomatoes, greens, lentils, topped with herb mayo and toasted pine nuts.

A meal is never complete without out a sweet treat or two, and The Exchange takes carb loading to the next level with Donut Fries served with molten Nutella and a take on the classic S’more, featuring vanilla bean ice cream, puff pastry and chocolate.

The re-opening of this iconic venue hopes to ‘reinvent’ the lively social scene The Exchange was best known for, a much loved local that will stand the test of time. Whether it be for business or pleasure, The Exchange takes pride in offering spectacular service paired with a charming atmosphere, great food and the perfect surrounds for rest or play.
