Dining | Pelicano Double Bay

It’s glam, it’s modern and it’s set right in the heart of Sydney’s trendy Double Bay.

Pelicano is tropical delight mixed with cocktail bar sophistication. Upstairs, along the footpath, the experience is similar to a harbourside coastal break thanks to the décor and relaxed Mediterranean menu.

Downstairs, the décor oozes harbourside elegance using the same colour palette of whites, royal blues and green but with carpeted floors and bright pop-art splashed all over the walls for a touch of cheek.

The seasonal food menu is kept minimal, although features a selection from the ocean and the paddock, so there is something for all. The drinks menu, on the other hand, is extensive with a fantastic selection of beer, cocktails, wine and champagne.

For entrée the raw Tuna Tataki slices seasoned with white truffle and ponzu was our first (and favourite) dish together with the Beef Carpaccio shaved over pickled cucumber and tossed with a soy dressing. Both proved that taste can match presentation. The Porcini & Truffle Arancini balls dipped in aioli were full and, as they should be, were bursting with flavour.

For mains you can’t go past the Sumac Baked Salmon on a bed of quinoa tabouleh with a pomegranate viniagrette and the Beef Tenderloin cooked medium rare and paired with a spinach puree, gnocchi and veal jus. Both were delicious and not an ounce of too heavy. The Quinoa Salad tossed with shaved fennel, raw zucchini and yoghurt made for a perfect trio.

Since dessert is a different stomach (right?) you can’t go past one of each. The Brownie Fondant with peanut butter, jelly and bacon powder was rich but worth it, and the Vanilla Pannacotta with pomegranate molasses and drizzled in honey was an absolute delight. A cheese board is also available for those wanting to finish off a bottle of Le Galantin 'Bandol Rose' with something savoury rather than sweet.

Pelicano is the perfect venue for any occasion if you enjoy relaxed yet stylish dining, or a comfortable and cosy place to retreat with friends.
