Miss Peaches: Launch Night

Welcome to the newest bar in Newtown that is Miss Peaches! Newtown’s new soul food kitchen, brings it’s own unique, southern style flavour. I was instantly greeted by the rustic spiral staircase in the entrance (don’t worry it’s been reinforced with what seems to be some pretty heavy duty lino - for those wobbly walks later in the evening), just don’t get too distracted by the fabulous 3D artwork of a bridge, a castle and the outside world, inside the words of Miss Peaches, but well worth the attention.

Miss Peaches cocktails aren’t those gaudy delicate things you get in most of today’s bars, served in basic glassware or awesome silver mugs, there was lots of discussion at the busy busy bar as to what everyone was going to order. Rum’n’Rasin float, with a full scoop of ice cream in it; the Watermelon Ruby Fizz, with their homemade watermelon soda; the sour Grape Drank or the The fresh Mint Julep?

Changing my mind five times, I found myself asking for a Watermelon Fizz and Mint Julip - damn I think I wanted Rum’n’Rasin - which I hear it had a tingling ginger sensation from their home made ginger beer mmmmm - it was sold out by the time we were ready for round two. I went the Grape Drank for my next choice and by far my favourtie - I don’t even like vodka - but that sour grape flavour was like nothing I had ever tasted before, and it was good.

Sitting on the balcony looking at the world below from Missendon road, where the street is quitter - but within gawking view of King street, I was comforted by my Gumbo soup. With hearty prawns, rice and a touch of spice, the Gumbo soup touched me from my head, to my toes to my soul - the perfect winter warmer. We were entertained by the well dressed and marvelous dancing feet of Mr Gramophone, his well dusted vinyls kept the crowd on their toes and entertained with his southern style tunes.

Welcome to Newtown Miss Peaches, you have made an impressive impression on your opening night - hardly a suprise from the collective of Richie Haines, Marty Routledge and Luke Della Santa, who have already graced us with The Vic and The Projects in Enmore. Can’t wait to get back, score myself a seat in one of your booths; finally try the Rum’n’rasin cocktail, with homemade ginger beer and more soul foods - like the cornbread sliders, buttermilk fried chicken and a piece of the Pumpkin Pie.
