Winter Weekends in CBR

In case you haven’t heard, it’s official. Even The New York Times agrees that Canberra is one of the world’s coolest little capitals.

A huge upswing in food, wine and design over the last five years has seen Canberra receive international coverage for its newfound offerings. You might have planned on a simple stop-over on your trip to the snow, but in reality there is so much more to explore.

We’ve got an insiders guide to the National’s Capital. Why not base yourself in Canberra and catch the bus to the snow, therefore allowing you to enjoy the best of both worlds?

The Wine.

Take our word for it; the Canberra region is producing some of the best wines in the country at the moment. Trailblazing companies like Clonakilla and Helm continue to produce dazzling vintages. Meanwhile, new labels – CollectorLerida EstateMount Majura and Four Winds – are creating riesling, tempranillo and nebbiolo to compete with the world’s best.

The Truffles

Once the provenance of the French, the cool, dry climate of Canberra isn’t just great for growing grapes. Beneath the frosty ground lies the Ascomycete fungus or, as popularly known, the Black Perigord Truffle.  During July and August, Canberra restaurants celebrate the local industry through The Truffle Festival. Enjoy a range of special menus and one-off events that showcase the rich flavours that so perfectly match the cooler weather. It’s a foodies delight, and all budgets are catered for.

The Buildings

With so many national institutions, the wide avenues of the planned capital feature some extraordinary examples from the last 100 years. From art deco to modernism to brutalism and beyond, these are stunning examples throughout the Parliamentary Triangle and beyond.

The Arts

It makes sense that the collections of National Gallery of Australia and the National Portrait Gallery hold some of the most important pieces in of our visual art history, however there are plenty of smaller galleries that will excite and delight. For the next wave of Australian art, visit the foyer of the ANU School of Art, or any of the three venues managed by Canberra Contemporary Art Space

The Food.

From street food to fine dining, Canberra has it all. The great news is that most of the highlights can be found within fifteen minutes of the city centre. We love hitting up The Mandalay Bus for it’s amazing mix of Burmese cuisine and hip-hop. Temporada takes tapas to a new level, while Italian & Sons is a refined experience for serious foodies who like to leaf through a wine list.

As you can see, Canberra and the local region is fast becoming known for its wonderful food and wine and with an array of world class arts and cultural attractions, you are sure to have a memorable winter weekend in Canberra!
