Health | Take Your Workout Outdoors

As the weather warms up, it seems pointless to workout in your cramped and sweaty gym. Take advantage of the beautiful Sydney scenery and take your session outside with this quick guide.

Top 5 places to workout outside the gym:

1. Beach - The sand makes exercise easier on your joints and also adds resistance. Plus, how about that amazing view you will get to enjoy while working out? As an added bonus, how about a dip in the ocean afterwards to cool off?

2. Outdoor fitness equipment - Many parks around Sydney have great fitness facilities where you can do effective functional training such as pull-ups, push-ups, dips, reverse crunches. Search for facilities at your local council website and take advantage of these free gyms!

3. Park - Get out into the fresh air by exercising in your local park. Take a group of friends and make your own bootcamp or circuit session. For something easy to organise and fun, take a ball and play a game of football or touch.

4. The Pool - Head to your local pool (or the ocean) for a great cardio workout that also builds strength and endurance. Swimming is also great for improving flexibility, balance and posture.

5. Street - A great way to fit exercise into a busy schedule is to walk to work. If your work is too far, get off the bus a stop earlier or park further away. Instead of using a treadmill, go for a jog outside. Even just a simple jog around the neighbourhood can be more effective for burning calories due to temperature variations and varied terrain.

Choose from the following exercises to put together your own workout which you can do absolutely anywhere.

Upper body: push-ups, pull-ups, dips, tricep dips, headstands/handstands, front lever, burpees.

Lower body: Squats, wall sit, step up, single leg deadlifts, jumping jacks, box jumps.

Core: Plank, L sit, leg raises, side plank, bridges, mountain climber, superman, Russian twist.
