Sovata: Local label putting Canberra on the map

Fashionistas rejoice! If you’re looking for comfortable, stylish, unique garments that will make you stand out of the crowd, look no further than local label Sovata.

Based in Canberra, Sovata creates vibrant and unique garments and hats for bold, confident women who are not afraid to make a fashion statement.

Jade Sargent, the mastermind behind Sovata, is a graduate of Canberra Institute of Technology and holds a Bachelor in Design (Fashion) and Certificate II in Millinery. This year she is looking froward to showcasing yet another collection at FASHFEST, Canberra’s biggest annual red-carpet fashion event.

Sovata's FASHFEST 2016 collection is a modern take on vintage, featuring key millinery pieces that can transform any look in unexpected ways.

“Silhouettes and design lines of the effortless 1950s style is what inspired this collection,” she says.

“I researched 1950s history, key shapes and silhouettes, and sourced vintage ‘50s patterns to learn about and discover how our body shapes have evolved.

“I saw my sketches evolve from experimentation, learning and a choice of key design elements, all while staying true to Sovata's style which uses unique colourways, bold design lines, and contrast.”

Having showcased at the premier fashion festival before, Jade says that a love for the nation’s capital is what motivated her to get involved time and time again – four years in fact!

“I have enjoyed being involved in FASHFEST since it's inception. What better place to showcase what you're trained to do than in your hometown,” she says.

“This year, I'm looking forward to seeing my whole concept come together under the bright lights.

“It's important to show the rest of Australia that we are more than just a dull political town. Canberra has a lot more style than the suits it's known for!”

You can see Sovata during Reverie, opening night, Thursday 29 September, 6.30pm.
