Top 10 events not to miss at VIVID SYDNEY

All of the lights!

Vivid Sydney is back for its sixth year, and the streets of Sydney will illuminate in less than three days. As a celebration of all forms of innovation from lighting sculptures, music and progressive thinkers from any industry, there will be 13 different locations, over 18 nights, incorporating an eclectic mix of visual sensations.

Vivid is bigger and better than ever before, here’s the top 10 events not to miss.

Vivid at Spice Cellar ERSKNVL, Imperial Hotel (23, 29  & 30 May and 5  & 6 June)

Spice has been bouncing around Sydney since 2011 - from sunrises at Home nightclub to the underground of Martin Place. It’s new home is The Imperial Hotel, and this late night Sydney institution is where you go when you don’t want to go home.

This is a celebration of local and international dance music, with the likes of Mike Huckaby and Jamie Jones gracing the decks. Head on down for some epic tunes (and maybe even a sneaky photo-booth session).

10 Years of Future Classic, Opera House (29 & 30 May)

You guys have heard of Flume right? What about Flight Facilities? The kids at Future Classic have developed into a powerhouse on the music scene over the years. Celebrating 10 years over two nights at Vivid, I sincerely hope you have purchased your tickets as this sold out long ago.

Those lucky enough to have a ticket can expect to see Touch Sensitive, Wave Racer and the magnificent Seekae.

Affinity, Circular Quay (22 May - 8 June)

The Affinity light installation is an interpretation of the intricacies that is the human brain. Step inside the web of orbs and watch them come to life under your touch with both light and sound. Inspired by the electrochemical activity of the brain and the effects of Alzheimer’s. I cannot wait to walk through and see this illumination of our most complex organ, and find out the hidden mysteries of my head.

Mad Racket, Opera House (23 May)

Mad Racket is back at Vivid after a three-year hiatus, taking us back 16 years with their first International guest, Matthew Herbert. Mad Racket is usually hosted in Marrickville at ‘The Bowlo’ boasting cheap drinks, but with this new, snazzy location you can be guaranteed a lotta fun.

Paint The Town, Circular Quay (22 May – 8 June)

An interactive way to explore the brilliance of the Sydney skyline, passers-through can paint with light with a touch screen, controlling the sequence and colours painting the skyscrapers surrounding the Quay. Located at the Overseas Passenger Terminal, this installation uses LED lights and state-of-the-art software created in Australia by 32 Hundred Lighting. Be the light you see in the skies of Sydney this Vivid.

Modulations: Italo Dining and Disco Club @ Carriageworks (31st May - 7th June)

Four legendary Sydney restaurants and Italian disco tunes in one room is sure to be one hell of a food/music experience. Join the rockstars of Sydney’s Italian food scene, from Icebergs Dining Room & Bar, Da Orazio Pizza + Porchetta, Fratelli Paradiso and 10williamst as they come together at Carriageworks for the ultimate Italian experience.

Transcendence, Martin Place (22 May – 8 June)

Up-and-coming Finely Tuned Media Artist, Joseph Crossley, utilises the latest in Intel technology to combine projection and computer mapping with code-driven light installations. Collaborating over the 18 nights, the various artists are carefully chosen to inject some glow into the Vivid Sydney nights.

TV on the Radio, Opera House (8 & 9 June)

Formed in New York in 2001, I’ve long been a fan of TV on the Radio. Having missed them at the 2013 Splendour (due to my inability to read a map), it’s been six years since I’ve since them at the Big Day Out. What better way to see TVOTR in Sydney than at one of our most iconic locations? With the eclectic, forever-surprising sounds of one of my favourite bands ringing through the Opera House, I am planning on being one ‘Happy Idiot’.

Daniel Johns, Opera House (28th – 29th May)

After eight years in the making Silverchair’s front man, Daniel Johns has finally released his debut solo album – Young Modern. And what better way to check out his new tunes than at Sydney’s iconic Opera House. If you haven’t bought tickets…HURRY UP, because this is bound to sell out in the next few days.

Vivid Seymore, Musify + Gamify (29th – 30th May)

Check out the Seymore Centre throughout Vivid for two concerts of adventurous experimental music by leading Australian artists, including Robbie Avenaim and Chris Abrahams. Each concert will be augmented by interventions happening outside the auditorium that involve “gamified” audience participation in the creation of music. A bit nerdy, but sounds like fun to us.
